WONDER BOY: Tony Hsieh, Zappos and the Myth of Happiness in Silicon Valley, by Angel Au-Yeung and David JeansA few chapters into “Wonder Boy,” Tony Hsieh sells his first company to Microsoft for $265 million. At 24, he is fabulously rich and one of the rising stars in the tech firmament. So he sits down to write a list of the happiest periods in his life. “Connecting with a friend and talking through the entire night until the sun rose made me happy,” he writes. Lying on the freezing ground on a filthy blanket, he suffered smoke inhalation that would kill him.
Former Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh died in 2020 following injuries he sustained in a house fire. Hsieh devised a scheme called "10X" that demanded achievement in multiples of ten, Forbes reported. In the last weeks of his life, the former Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh spent much of his wealth in a scheme he devised called 10X. The LLC had $10 million to fund documentary film projects, which entitled Grande to a $1 million commission. The 10X scheme sometimes caused disputes.
But in recent weeks, as companies brace for tougher times ahead, the assault on middle managers has picked up new steam. At Meta, Mark Zuckerberg is eliminating layers of middle management, demoting many supervisors to the ranks of the supervised. Zuckerberg offered a telling explanation for his decision: He doesn't want to have "managers managing managers, managing managers, managing managers, managing the people who are doing the work." In the UKG survey, 42% of middle managers said they were often or always stressed — a higher share than either frontline workers or C-suite executives. The businesses most likely to weather the current economic turmoil, Harter says, are those that unlock the hidden value of middle managers.

Employee advocacy has been shown to boost trust between brands and their customers more than ads. What consumers think about employees' social media postsRecent studies have shown that employee advocacy programs can increase brand awareness and positive perceptions about a company, drive sales, and improve employee recruitment and retention. In 2022, the company's social media reach hit 81 million with an earned media value of $2.5 million, Whalen said. Data shows that employee advocacy programs can also help boost sales. According to LinkedIn, companies that encourage sales teams to share content on social media generate more leads and are more likely to exceed their sales quotas.
Amazon .com Inc. is slowly dismantling Tony Hsieh’s version of Zappos, more than two years after the famed entrepreneur’s death. Zappos laid off more than 300 employees last month, or about 20% of the Las Vegas-based company’s workforce, according to people familiar with the layoffs and a Zappos memo viewed by The Wall Street Journal.
Amazon cut more than 300 jobs at its subsidiary Zappos last month, The Wall Street Journal reported. The shoe and clothing retailer cut about a fifth of its workforce in January, according to a Zappos memo seen by The Journal. The job cuts were "ultimately made to ensure Zappos is set up to continue to provide an exceptional customer experience, long-term," Laura Davis of Zappos told The Journal. The Zappos layoffs come alongside the largest job cuts in Amazon's history last month when it scrapped more than 18,000 roles. Amazon-brand aggregator Boosted Commerce also made job cuts this month as it laid off 16 employees.

Adele reminds us how Vegas made artist residencies cool

After being abruptly postponed in January, Adele’s Las Vegas residency, “Weekends With Adele,” made its debut at Caesar’s Palace on Friday. But Adele highlights how it’s been transformed into an artistic achievement, why it’s never going away and reminds us how Las Vegas made residencies cool. This isn’t a complete list because a Las Vegas residency is no longer necessarily out of the ordinary. Does this all mean a Vegas residency is the right fit for everyone? In the shifting economic climate and post-pandemic realities, a Vegas residency may be more appealing to artists whowouldn’t normally consider it.
Court documents filed this week provide more insight into the final weeks of the life of Zappos founder Tony Hsieh. The documents, which also noted that Hsieh had begun chewing on cigarettes as his health declined, state that Hsieh first began using ketamine in November 2019 before openly experimenting with nitrous oxide, KTNV reported. Per KTNV, Andrew Hsieh was offered a $1 million salary to care for his brother. According to the filings, Andrew Hsieh also requested that "vitamins and protein supplements" be added to his brother's food, as he was becoming increasingly emaciated, KTNV reported.
